What is the Metagame... Exactly?

Well? ...

What is it? Hmm?

No answer? Not Easy to Define is it?

I said the same thing, but then I found this statement by somebody somewhere.

“The metagame refers to the game universe outside of the game itself.”

Now what does that mean? Gawd All of these questions! Well what the above quote means is that the metagame is anything that affects the game, that shouldn’t. So for example, Hikeda and I are having a match, and In the terms of the game, I should have no preconception of to what kind of deck Hikeda will use, but since I know the guy fairly well ( as well as you can through skype and an internet card game :P) I know that he will probably use Underworlders. And from my knowledge of underworlders I know that they are usually high damage dealing decks, so therefore I have a small understanding of what style Hikdea might play.

QUICK, Think of what Deck Hikeda will play, Creatures, EVERYTHING!

...

You thought of a typical Burn Deck Right? Don’t lie. You probably did, Don’t worry EVERYONE did. So I just thought of what deck Hikeda will play. So I can already assume a way to counter-act it, like for example, With massive healing, or a mugic negation deck.

Now this is ALL happening before I even started the Match! I could be completely and utterly wrong and he could use one of Keekers’ overworld decks.

My point here... Try to avoid the metagame ENTIRELY! In otherwords, try your absolute hardest, everytime you go into a match to have no preconceptions of what deck the opposition will be useing. Now that is not saying Don’t go in expecting nothing. Just expect anything!

Just try this next time you play your best friend and you’ll be surprised at how different you’ll play.

  1. But I'm safe, as no one could predict the kind of deck I would play! Ha!
... Who said Danians? How did you know that?! Who told you my secrets?!

This is quite a good article and quite useful, but that's not the metagame I know in Chaotic. Now, "The Metagame" and "Metagaming" are two different things as I would know them. Metagaming is playing a game using outside information, as you described (Quite well), but "The Metagame" is the complete entirety of a game, using it's definition "Competing in a game with analysis of all possible factors." It is called The Metagame because it includes all factors, even non-game ones. For example, in Chaotic, even though there is no rule against using all DoP common cards against a high ranking player, because new cards have been released, it is unwise. "The Metagame" is an analysis of what is competitive (i.e, maxxor PoP is more powerful because Xerium Armour was released)
I do believe Metagaming is used more in terms of RP, when your character knows something that you know, but the character shouldn't, but has moved out to TCGs and Online RPGs.

  2. The thing about the Metagame is that the decks in it are usually the top decks of the game. Making your own deck or variations of those decks makes a lot of sense though, since what you're doing may be the basics of a Metagame deck, but it would play differently.

The thing about Chaotic is that you have almost all your resources at your disposal right at the beginning of the game. You have all your Mugic, your Creatures and Battlegear. The only luck involved is really just drawing attacks and flipping good locations. Chaotic is a game of anticipation and planning, more than on the go thinking and adjusting strategies. Sure you can say you'll save this Mugic, and waste some of your bad attacks, but that's pretty much basic thoughts, or logic in fact. So really, Chaotic is about making your deck work in all possible situations and capable of dealing with any situations. Anticipation is therefore really important, so adjusting your deck to suit a situation would make a lot of sense.

Sometimes I really wonder why you aren't allowed to sideboard in a Chaotic tournament. Sometimes one deck just can't beat another, and therefore adjustments would be necessary, and a sideboard is just the thing to allow players to deal with any problems they may be facing.

  3. Darn..I have no idea why, but this is my second time posting this...Here we go again.

Really good advice, Kerb! It seems everyone freaks out once they heard the words "Neekwin," "Supercooled Rain" or "Vial of Liquid Thought." And, as you've said, you should just try to get past all that and see if you can still win!

I hope some will realize that in the near future as the game progresses...

  4. i just want to add the most common very good decks used.
*if they use underworld, which is very likely, they will not only deal good attacks, but also have a high extra fire damage(ex. fire 15 when chaor the fierce has whepcrack). and most attacks will be fire and power.

*if they have overworld, they will most likely rely on elements, and i mean 3 or 4. most of the attacks will be multi elemental attacks.(element proofing is good, like nimmei(the new 1))

*if they use danians they will most likely rely on mandiblor union. strike and range are good to use on weak creatures in the back.

*if they use mipedians.... gasp! there are many ways. warbeasts, which a good strategy is once again range and swift, to attack conjurors first. but watch out for khorror with stone mail, u might wanna put a attack that rids of battlegear(ex. strengthining bond). he could also use the invis strike ability. iflar with 2 owaykis and a marquis darini in the back, iflar will have strike 35, and u could add to that with mugic(ex. jig of reinforcement). so be prepared to negate invisibilty.

*if he uses unity, try to take out generals first, since they improve others by unity. and be prepared for unified tribecharge.(there are 5 tribes, generic past creatures are tribeless, so the attack will do 60 damage, until u take creatures out.

*if he uses generic past creatures be ready for high energy and good battlegear. he will most likley have locations and other things that improve past creatures. also be prepared for 2 tarin in the back to give creatures with earth 20 energy.

*these are for 6v6 decks. if u have any questions for me about 3v3 or 1v1 be free to ask.
(1v1 tip, see how good khorror is with stone mail, when he drops his recklessness and gains 50 energy.)

  5. also a tip, these listed are the most common elements and high stats for the correct tribe.

*Underworld usually has elemental type fire, and the usual highest discipline is power.
*Overworld usually uses elemental type water, and wisdom is the highest discipline.
*Mipedians usually have elemental type air, and speed is there usual highest discipline.
*Danians must have earth, and highest in courage.
*Unified will be easier since different tribes will have different high disciplines and different elemental types. this means attacks wont be easy to arrange for him.
*Generic has earth, except for proboscar, and there disciplines are also pretty scattered. courage is probably the highest.

  6. 1 last thing...
some combos to look out for.

*blades and kha'rall husk armor(kha'rall husk armor some attacks will deal 0 damage, but bladez has the ability to make 0 damage attacks 15 damage.)
*proboscar and dread tread(proboscar can move into any space, and with dread tread he can have 2 combats)
*stelgar vicious mutation(in general is a threat)
*chaor the fierce and whepcrack(fire 15, which can be increased with locations, mugic, or magmon engulfed)
*ursis(or any1) with xerium armor(u should know what xerium armor is)
*khorror(or any1) with stone mail(like i said khorror loses his recklessness and gains 50 energy)
*glost and varanohs(if he has a bunch of conjurors that die to give glost ultimate power, varanohs might be equipped to glost for him to move around wherever and attack weak creatures of yours, if u have any)
*Maxxor protector of perim (or any1) with xerium armor. (maxxor does 5 more damage with every attack, and that 5 is added to itself everytime. with xerium armor making the battle have more attacks, this 5 extra damage builds quick. fortunetly it resets every combat.)
levitaar might also be the battlegear on maxxor, which increases his bonus damage 5.
*gannim and ...(gannim deals 10 damage to u if u fail a check or challenge. he has high courage. if the swartbron is the location the lowest courage fails checks, which means gannim deals 10 damage to u everytime u play a check. there is also a battlegear, i think its colstone, that also does extra damage if the opposing creature(you) fails a check/challenge.
*i most likely didnt cover all the good "watch out combos" so i will try to post some more if they come up.

once again if u hav any questions, feel free to ask.
